Stokes County detectives found the body of missing woman Monica Godley on Wednesday in an abandoned house on Pine Hall Road in what the medical examiner has ruled a death suicide.

On September 9, the sheriff’s office received an agency assist request from the Beaufort County authorities and were told the woman was believed to be visiting a friend in the Pine Hall area. Local deputies visited the residence in an attempt to locate Godley, but she wasn’t found.

Detectives continued to search and on Wednesday obtained a search warrant for an abandoned house where they located the deceased body.

The body was later positively identified as Godley who died from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
