After a somewhat slow start, filing for the fall’s municipal elections picked up in the past week.
At press time, eight people filed paperwork and paid filing fees to run for mayoral seats, council seats or board seats.
In King, incumbent council members Charles Allen and Wesley Carter will face challengers Ashley Thomas Turner and Steven Hewett in the race for two council seats. All seats in King are elected for a four year term.
Danbury Mayor Janet Whitt is seeking re-election for a two year term. Incumbent Wendi Spraker filed to retain one of the two council seats, the other held by David Hoskins.
In Walnut Cove, Charles Byron is running unopposed for mayor, which is a two year term. Incumbent Sharon Conaway has filed for one of two commissioner seats which are four year terms.
Filing is still available through this Friday, July 21 at noon. Weekday office hours at the Board of Elections in Danbury are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Eligible candidates must be at least 21 years old, and eligible, based on registration and residency, to vote for the office which he or she seeks (i.e., a Walnut Cove mayoral candidate must reside within the town limits of Walnut Cove and therefore be eligible to vote in a Walnut Cove municipal election).
