North Stokes used their senior leadership and experience to run past rival West Stokes on the volleyball court Monday night in Danbury. The Vikings won 3-1, the first time since 2015, when coach Christine Condone took over the program.
“We have great senior leadership this year and everyone else follows along with them,” Condone said. “Our sophomores play a lot of JO volleyball in the summer and these seniors really want to win. The team mixes well together and they are a very strong unit. This is actually the first time our entire team has played together since last year.”
The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 advantage on two aces by Abby Walker, but the lead was short lived. North jumped to 12-7 behind the serving of Sami Bennett only to see West battle back and knot the score at 12. The Vikings sprinted back to a four point cushion and led by six before winning the first match on a block by Leanna Harbour.
In game two, the Vikings jumped to a 5-2 edge, but the Lady Wildcats caught up and took a 16-14 lead. North’s energy proved to be strong and they tied the score at 18 and closed the game on kills by Lora Wood and Jaden Tuttle for the 2-0 lead.
West bounced back in the third game with a 25-22 victory. The Lady Wildcats took a 14-7 lead with the help of Walker’s five kills and freshman Kiley Lickfeld added 10 assists.
In the fourth match, the Lady Vikings led from the start. Coach Jordan Stevens called multiple timeouts, but couldn’t stop the momentum of the green and white. Libero Skylar Amos added nine digs in the period, while Tuttle logged eight assists and Leann Sessoms five kills.
Amos finished the game with 21 digs and Tuttle assisted on 23 balls and blocked three shots. Sessoms tallied 12 kills and Wood 11. The Wildcats Blakeleigh Goldbach scored 15 kills and Emily Emerson recorded 22 digs. Lickfeld rung up 33 assists.
North Stokes improves to 1-0 and will face McMichael (3-0) on Wednesday in Madison. West drops to 0-3 and plays Starmount (2-2) on Thursday at home.
