West Stokes track teams beat county rivals North and South Stokes on Thursday in Walnut Cove. The Lady Wildcats won eight of the 18 events and finished with 57.5 team points. The Vikings were a close second with 53.5 and the Sauras 23. In the men’s events, West tallied 64.5 points with South coming in at 60 and North 33.5.
First place finishers for the Wildcats included Laila McGee in the girl’s high jump (4-10), Sydney Cromer in the 100 meter dash (14.20), Sydney Cockerham in the 200 meter dash (28.20) and 400 meter (1:04.90), Erin Duke in the 800 meter run (2:40), and Caroline Pulliam in the 1600 meter run (6:00.30), where she finished more than 12 seconds better than her season best. The girls also won the 4×400 and 4×800 meter relays.
West Stokes Dustin Blevins finished as the big winner by taking four different events. He won the long jump (19-8), triple jump (38-05), 200 meter dash (23.00), and was a member of the 4×200 relay team that won in 1:41.30. William Hicks (100 meter dash) and Adam Mayes (800 meter run) were the only other Wildcats to win first place. Hicks won in 11.7, while Mayes finished at 2:14.40.
On the Lady Vikings team Josie Stanley won the shot put (29-08.5), Hailey Sheppard took the pole vault (8-6) and the discus throw (86-10), while Makayle Rogers was victorious in four events and set season bests in the long jump (14-10), triple jump (31-4.5), 100 meter hurdles (18.5), and 300 meter hurdles (56.1).
South Stokes Jadyn Hicks placed second in the long jump (13-3) and 100 meter hurdles (18.9), both a season best, while Antoinette France finished second in the discus throw (86-07) and shot put (28-01.25). Ryley Lawson placed second in the 300 meter hurdles (58.0).
During the men’s race, the Sauras had four athletes finish in place first, while the Vikings tallied three. Nimai Browning won two events for South, the 100 meter hurdles (16.1) and 300 meter hurdles (44.4). Kaleb Mitchell finished first in the high jump (5-8), Austin Harger in the pole vault (9-0), and Elijah Dunn in the discus throw (117-09), more than five feet longer than his season best. North Stokes Jacob McGee won the 1600 meter run (4:48) and 3200 meter run (10:29.6), while teammates Elijah France took the shot put (37-02.5) and Jackson Heath the 400 meter dash (55.5).
The Sauras next track meet is slated for Monday when they host Walkertown and Starmount. The Vikings will welcome Winston-Salem Prep and East Surry on Thursday, and the Wildcats will make up a conference meet on Tuesday at Carver.
