Hemric, Duke qualify for state meet

North, South, and West Stokes participated in the 1A/2A Midwest Regional Cross Country meet at Ivey Redmond Sports Complex in Kernersville on Saturday. North Stokes sophomore runner, 1A Abigail Hemric won the 5K with a time of 20:08.55 and West Stokes junior Erin Duke placed ninth in the 2A bracket with a time of 20:25.43. Both ladies qualified for the NCHSAA State Meet on Saturday, back at Ivey Redmond.

Hemric finished in second place last year behind Bradford Prep Charter runner Anna Petr.

“I led most of the way and she came out of nowhere and won,” stated Hemric. “This year my plan was to hang back for the first two miles and then really push the last mile. It feels really good to win this year.”

This marks Duke’s first year qualifying at the state level. She was injured last season and finished 29th with a time of 22:38.15 her freshman year.

Both Hemric and Duke finished on the all-region team.

North Stokes ladies team finished seventh. Elizabeth McBride placed 31st out of 84 runners with a time of 24:10.23. Behind her were: Emma Stanbery (25:52.96), Crystal Gwyn (26:02.93), Madelyn Briggs (27:43.80) and Josie Stanberry (32:13.01).

Ryley Lawson represented South Stokes and placed 28th with a time of 23:59.98, a personal best for the all-conference runner.

West Stokes girls placed 14th on Saturday. Caroline Pulliam finished 50th out of 149 with a time of 23:08.51 and Hunter Jackson came in three spots later at 23:20.86. Addie Pulliam finished with a time of 27:23.58, Laila McGee 28:10.92, Sylvia McGee 28:16.32 and Amber Tullock 29:38.58.

For the boy’s races, neither school had anyone qualify for states, but every runner from South Stokes finished with a personal best time. Austin Harger placed 32nd out of 107 with a time of 19:25.67. Elijah Mitchell finished 19:26.27, Jackson Boles 19:41.49, Landon Parsons 19:49.59, Shemar Dalton 21:22.12, Ricky Gonzales 21:43.27 and Chris Slate 21:44.83. The team finished seventh out of 13 teams and will return every runner next year.

North Stokes Jacob McGee finishing 33rd with a time of 19:26.16 and Jaden Smith 51st at 20:22.68.

In the 2A race, West Stokes senior Adam Mayes placed 47th with a time of 18:36.90, followed by teammates TJ Magaraci (19:12.25), Jacob Adkins (19:20.51), Zach Watts (19:56.80), Cameron Knox (20:23.05), Dylan Turney (20:34.56) and Nick Palmer (21:53.76).

The team placed 15th out of 23 teams.
