North and South Stokes volleyball teams traveled to McMichael High School on Saturday for an eight team tournament. Teams included: Bartlett Yancey, Page, Northern Guilford, North Lincoln, Cornerstone Charter, McMichael, North Stokes, and South Stokes. North Lincoln came away the champion of the tournament with wins over Page and Northern Guilford in the winner’s bracket.

All of the teams participated in a morning session of round robin with each school playing one game against each other to 15 points. After the early session, each team was ranked in order of how they performed. South Stokes received a six seed for going 3-4, while North struggled in the morning session with a 0-7 record and was seeded eighth.

The Lady Sauras played Cornerstone Charter in the consolation bracket. South swept through the Cardinals in three sets by winning 25-19, 25-5, and 25-11. In the game for fifth place, South Stokes fell to host school, McMichael, in three games.

“I was really pleased with our hard work and effort today,” said Sauras coach Jayson Duncan. “I think we were a little sluggish and not awake earlier in the day, but finished strong in the afternoon. Our goal continues to be to get better every time step on the court and I believe we are doing that.”

North Stokes was pitted against 3A McMichael in the consolation bracket and fell 25-9, 25-13, and 25-8. Playing for seventh place against Cornerstone, the Vikings rallied behind each other and won 25-16, 25-23, and 25-14.

“The girls are growing as a team,” stated Vikings coach, Christine Condon. “We are young and I see improvements every day. We were able to find a balance in the Cornerstone game and all the pieces of the puzzle finally fit. Our blocking picked up, which allowed our defense to get under the ball and provide solid passes for the setter. I am very proud that they came together to finish the day strong.”

South Stokes (3-1) beat Elkin on Monday and will continue with two more games this week against East Wilkes and rival West Stokes (3-0) at home on Thursday. North Stokes (1-2) will travel to McMichael for a rematch on Thursday.
