There’s a new sweet spot in King. The Ice Bar, which serves shaved ice, opened last week, across from Walmart on Ingram Drive and is keeping a steady flow of traffic.
“It was kind of a last minute thing,” said owner Megan Mabe, who also runs Southern Charm & Co., a boutique on the same property with her husband, Josh. “We had gotten a snow cone somewhere else and it made me think that King really needs something like this. So, my husband and I called to see how we needed to go about things and we opened pretty quickly.”
Mabe said in a few short days they received more than 800 follows on Facebook and the community has been very supportive.
“It’s just been word of mouth and a little social media, but I think it’s something different in the area. It’s been fun to see so many people happy we’re here. We’ve had a lot of teenagers come and hang out and as a parent, I love to see that.”
The Ice Bar offers 24 flavors which include traditional cherry, blue raspberry, strawberry along with some unique options of cotton candy, coffee, wedding cake and bubblegum.
“We have a snow cream flavor and that’s been really popular. It’s very good,” Mabe said.
Another favorite, for .50 extra, is toppings of sour spray, sprinkles, Nerds, gummy worms and a marshmallow cream.
“The marshmallow cream makes it. It’s like a marshmallow fluff, but a little creamier and not quite as thick. It’s really a northern thing. My husband’s parents are from Maryland and when I met them, they introduced me to it.”
Mabe said in an effort to keep it simple, they offer just two sizes, small for $1.50 and large for $3.
“We have five kids so we’re always thinking economical. We wanted to offer families a place to sit together and hang out that doesn’t cost a fortune. Right now, we have picnic tables and cornhole and we’re adding other games this week. We’re also planning some outdoor events like a movie night and having a band come out.”
The Ice Bar at 115 Ingram Drive is open Monday through Saturday from noon until 9:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. until 9:30 on Sunday.
