When students take a break from the classroom for summer, make sure reading is on the list of fun things to do. The 2018 Summer Reading Program at the Walnut Cove Public Library’s theme this year is “LIBRARIES ROCK!” and encourages children and families to use their local public libraries for fun activities and programs and to check out good books.
A key goal of the Summer Reading Program is to maintain reading skills during the summer and research has shown that time spent reading is effective in stopping the “summer slide,” or the loss of reading skills for children during the summer months.
The summer goals are to motivate families and children to read for pleasure, help school-aged children maintain reading skills, establish the library as a vital part of the community and encourage partnerships with schools, and have fun by offering educational programs to keep children active throughout the summer.
The programs are free and open to children of all ages and abilities. Programs are held on Monday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. June 25 through August 20.
