9-10 Minor girls

defeat Rowan

King 9-10 Minor girls traveled to Rowan Monday night, with King coming away with a 19-7 victory.

Allyssa Duggins was the winning pitcher – with 35 batters faced, 11 strikeouts, 10 walks and five hits.

Leading in the offense was Mackenzie Parker, who was 4-for-5 with three doubles and a single and MacKenzie Barber, who was 2-for-4 with a double and single.

Taylor Cunningham was 1-for-2 with a sac bunt and Sarah Stone was 1-for-4 with a walk. Hannah Hauser had two walks and contributed as a courtesy runner for the catcher with great base running.

King jumped out first in the top of the second inning 2-0 before Rowan went ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the inning. Rowan pushed the lead to 4-2 before King came alive with six runs in the fourth, six runs in the fifth and five in the sixth.

King gave up one run in the fifth and two in the sixth before a slide into home plate. Rowan missed the plate and Ashley Philyaw applied the tag to end the game.

“The girls started off a little rocky but great base running and the great hitting we started to play more our game,” manager Chris Duggins said. “(The) girls are really playing great and are operating as one unit. Our defense today was a little shaky at times but they bounced back to make the key plays. I have great coaches in Adrienne and Scott Cunningham and also Samantha Wilson (former Little leaguer who played on the 2006 state champs and regional runner up). These three have been great in getting the girls ready.”

King was scheduled to play Wednesday night in King against Northwest Forsyth at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, King beat East Surry 15-2.

Duggins threw 53 pitches – walked one, struck out five and allowed one hit.

Duggins had two hits for King. Taylor Cunningham had six unassisted plays at first base and Sydney Shelton had a base-hit saving catch in the third inning.

East Surry used five different pitchers but could never establish a consistent pitcher – walking 21.

“(The) girls were very patient at the plate and made East Surry try to find the zone,” Duggins said. “We did make a couple of base running mistakes but overall we played hard and our girls deserved the win. They have worked hard over the past two weeks preparing for these games. I am very proud of them and their efforts today.”
