Stokes County residents can celebrate Memorial Day this year by attending observances being held around the county. Although this year the holiday is technically on Monday, May 31, services are being held on Sunday, May 30, which is the original date of Memorial Day.
There will be a service in Danbury on Sunday at 3 p.m. in the meeting room of the Stokes County Board of Education at the old courthouse in Danbury. The guest speaker for the gathering is George Hicks Jr. whose topic is “Confederate Soldiers From Stokes County.” Hicks is a Stokes County historian and author of several books related to the history of Stokes County,
The Sunday afternoon event is sponsored by the Stokes County Sons of Confederate Veterans. Refreshments will be served.
Later that day in King, there will be a Memorial Day observance at 5 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial in Central Park. Colonel Coley Hunsucker, USAF Ret., will be the guest speaker. Participants are asked to bring lawn chairs.
If inclement weather interferes with Sunday’s event in King, the service will be postponed until Monday, May 31, at 5 p.m.
