Bishop McGuinness: Even though they are no longer a runaway favorite, the Villains had a strong season and remain capable of beating anyone in the conference. Sharpshooter Megan Buckland can score in bunches for Bishop, who finished lower than first place since entering the Northwest Conference for the first time this season.
Mount Airy: A big reason why the Villains finished second in the conference. Mount Airy handed Bishop two of its three league defeats and is probably the deepest team in the Northwest. The Bears have shown deadly accuracy this season from long range and they’ve made clutch free throws in big games as well. The Bears are 5-1 against Bishop, East Surry and North Stokes.
East Surry: Kelsey Long is the go-to player for the Cardinals, who will have to contend with the Villains if they get past North Stokes on Wednesday. Bishop and East have met a ton in recent years, with the Villains owning a perfect record against the Cards.
North Stokes: Finished fourth behind three very strong 1A teams in the league. The Vikings posted upset wins this season against the Villains and North Surry Greyhounds, who will compete in the 2A conference tourney. Jodie Lemons (17.2 points, 8.5 rebounds per game) leads the scoring attack for North, but she has plenty of help from the supporting cast, including Liz Warden (7.9 points, 5.2 assists, 3.5 steals) and Miranda Clary (7.7 points).
WS Prep: The team’s best player, guard Anquinette Crawford, routinely scores 20 points or more a game. The Phoenix though have struggled against the upper echelon teams though, going 0-10 against the teams that finished above them in the conference.
2A Girls
South Stokes: Owns the tiebreaker with a season sweep against Surry Central for the No. 2 seed in 2A for the state tournament next week. The Sauras split the season series with the Wildcats, winning the last matchup in Walnut Cove. Stephanie Mitchell and Hannah Wood have been the catalysts out of the backcourt for the Sauras.
North Surry: Eight players average 4.7 points or better in the Greyhounds lineup, led by Courtney Campbell. North Surry is the favorite to win the conference title, owning a perfect 5-0 record against Surry Central, West Stokes and South Stokes. The final regular season game with the Sauras was Wednesday night.
West Stokes: A rebuilding year of sorts for the Wildcats, who have a varsity lineup with five sophomores and a freshman. Keeona Mitchell and Carly Madigan have been West’s top scorers this season. Since winning four of six in late December early January, the Wildcats ran into tough sledding in a brutal conference - dropping 10 games in a row.
Surry Central: A difficult year for the Lady Eagles, who have lost 13 of the last 14.
