November’s municipal elections are shaping up to be true races in Stokes County. The deadline to file with the Stokes County Board of Elections for municipal candidacy was Friday, July 17, at 12 p.m. At that time, multiple candidates had signed up for the races in all three municipalities—Danbury, King and Walnut Cove.

In Danbury, two have filed for the position of mayor. Janet S. Whitt has come forward to challenge the incumbent, Mayor Jane Priddy Charleville.

Two seats on the Danbury Town Council are open—those of current council members Carolyn Manuel and Joseph DelGuercio. They did not file for re-election. Three Danbury residents will vie for those seats: Olivia Nelson Shelton, Rebecca S. Sullivan and John Turpin.

In the race for King City Council, two seats will be open—those of incumbent council members Carolyn W. Byerly and Robert Gray Southern, both of whom have decided to run for re-election. They are being challenged by Charles Allen and Wesley Carter.

In Walnut Cove, the mayoral position is up for grabs. Current mayor John Hodgkin has thrown his hat into the ring again, as has former mayor pro-tem Alma Childers.

The race for the two available seats on the Town of Walnut Cove Board of Commissioners is already a hotly contested one. Present board members Dr. Debbie Cowan and Kim Lewis have filed for re-election. They are joined in the race by newcomers Sharon Conaway, J. Elwood Mabe and Charles Mitchell.

Mayoral positions are for two years. Town council, town board and city council seats are four-year positions. All races are non-partisan.
