Five area swimmers win gold

Darle Shouse, Lou Charland, Sun McCoy, Jerry Sneed, and Margaret McClanahan, local swimmers at the King “Y”, won gold medals at the Piedmont Plus Senior Games swim meet held at the Kernersville “Y” on April 22.

The swimmers competed in a number of events, including freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke in lengths from 25 yards to 500 yards. Winning at the Piedmont Plus Senior Games qualifies them to enter the North Carolina Senior Games, which will be held September in Raleigh. Winning at the state level qualifies swimmers to compete in the National Senior Games. This year Shouse will compete in the National Senior Games, which will be held on the campusof Stanford University at Palo Alto, Calif. in August. Charland and McClanahan competed successfully in the last National Senior Games, which were held in Louisville, Ky. One of this year’s swimmers, Sneed, is participating also in track events, another event of the Piedmont Plus Senior Games currently in progress.

The North Carolina Senior Games began 25 years ago with a vision to create a year round health promotion and education program for adults 55 years of age and better. Participants may enter 22 different sports. The Senior Games is a wellness and prevention pogrom to keep the body, mind and spirit fit while enjoying the company of friends, family, spectators and volunteers.
