The field events will be held Tuesday and the running events will be Wednesday. Both days the events get underway at 4 p.m.
The Lady Vikings are expected to contend in what should be a close race with West Wilkes and Bishop McGuinness for the girls title.
On the boys side, South Stokes, Mount Airy, East Wilkes and North Stokes are the frontrunners.
“Our competition in our conference is so strong,” North coach Rodney King said. “The past two or three state meets, a team from our conference has finished in the three in the state.”
North Stokes High has become a favorite site in the region for hosting conference and regional meets. Through fundraisers over a 10-year period, North purchased a $14,000 automatic timing system with photo finish capability.
“The coaches like coming up here, even though it’s out in the middle of nowhere. They like the way we run it,” King said. “We’ve got the best facility in the region.”
This is the fourth time in five years the meet has been held at North. Last year, the conference championship was held at West Wilkes High and the Midwest 1-A regional was held at Albemarle High.
North has had a rubber track since 2000 and this year resurfaced the shot and discus area to look similar to the state meet.
North’s girls team is young but talented while the boys have a core group of seniors leading the way.
For the girls, Taylor York is currently the top ranked high jumper in 1-A while Sean Nickell is the top ranked in the boys pole vault.
West Wilkes has won the last two Northwest 1-A girls titles while South Stokes won last year’s boys championship.
“This is good for Stokes County. This is a big sporting event,” King said.
The region has 22 schools that will be represented in the Midwest Regional on May 9. Last year’s Midwest regional champs were South Stokes boys and Winston-Salem Prep’s girls.
Admission for the conference championship on Tuesday and Wednesday will be $5.
