The Golden Eagles swept past the Lady Sauras with a 6-0 win in the first round of the conference tournament at South Stokes High School on Monday night.
Lady Sauras Coach Jordan Stevens said that his team had trouble getting into the game “mentally.”
“We weren’t here,” he said. “We just didn’t come to play.”
Surry Central jumped out with a 2-0 lead at the top of the second inning. Then, the team fell silent until the top of the sixth inning, when when a hit by Madison Robertson brought in a runner. Later on, Kendra Johnson smashed a three-run homer, which brought the score to 6-0.
Both teams came into the game evenly matched with a conference record of 8-6. Surry Central fired up the bats early on and kept them going to pull through with the win.
Coach Stevens said the Sauras managed to get on base, but struggled with base running.
“We weren’t smart on the bases,” he said. “We got runners on, but then we got thrown out.”
