Officers with the Walnut Cove Police Department are still trying to determine who hit power poles and a mailbox on Main Street early Saturday morning and left the scene.

Sgt. Justin Gallimore said the call was reported at 4:21 a.m. Saturday that someone had hit a mailbox on Main Street near Heritage and hit guide wires inbetween two light poles, causing them to split. The vehicle left the scene, and officers do not have a description of the vehicle or the driver.

The power poles had to be replaced by Duke Power, costing about $3,000. Power flickered but there was not an outage, Gallimore said. Power crews were on the scene Saturday morning trying to clean up the mess.

The damage to the mailbox was about $150.

The police department is asking anyone with information about the hit-and-run incident to call the department at 591-7121 or Stokes dispatch at 593-8130 to get a message to Walnut Cove officers.
