Stokes County received a dusting of snow in the early morning hours on Friday. The wintry weather did not create any major problems on roads, which were clear, as seen in this picture overlooking Dodgetown Road.
Wintry weather rolled through northwest North Carolina in the early morning hours on Friday, dusting Stokes County with a layer of snow.
The arrival of snow and freezing rain in the early morning prompted school officials to close school on Friday after originally calling for a two-hour delay.
Nick Fillo, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va., said that Danbury received about a half-inch of snow in the system.
“There wasn’t a whole lot of snow and icing accumulations,” Fillo said.
As of Friday around 11 a.m., temperatures were above freezing and were expected to rise into the upper 30s as the system moved out of the area.
Fillo said that a high pressure system set up across the eastern face of the Appalachians last night, bringing with it “cool, dry air.” When that system collided with a warmer precipitation front, the weather soon transitioned over to snow and freezing rain.
The wintry weather has moved out of the area for now, but Fillo said that there is a slight chance for some rain Friday evening.
This latest batch of wintry weather did not seem to create any major problems for the area. Roads remain clear and local power providers have not reported any significant outages.
