The Wildcats stayed ahead on a small margin to down East Surry’s Cardinals 78-71 in the semifinal round of the conference tournament at North Surry High School on Tuesday night.
Both teams came out strong and posted up double-digit scoring in the first quarter. At the end of the first, the game was tied 22-22.
The second quarter was low-scoring for both teams, but the Wildcats inched ahead by one point by the end of of second.
At halftime, the score was 31-30.
The Wildcats and the Cards went back into high-scoring mode in the final two quarters. The Wildcats stayed ahead by grabbing another 24 points in the quarter.
Going into the final quarter, the Cards were down by five points.
But, the Wildcats outscored the Cards 23-21 in the fourth quarter to stay ahead by a nose and clench a 78-71 win for the evening.
The Wildcats will face off against the winner of Wednesday’s tournament game between Winston-Salem Prep and Bishop McGuinness on Friday at North Surry about 8 p.m.
