by Erik Spencer Hill
The Wildcats rolled past North Surry’s Greyhounds with 70-24 victory on Monday night in the first round of conference tournament play at West Stokes High School.
“I was pleased with the way we came out,” Wildcats Coach Dan Spainhour said. “I like the way we scored the ball.”
Wildcat Keshawn Rawleigh led the Wildcats in scoring for the evening with 18 points. Alston Furr and Reid Goodson had 15 and 10 points.
Josh Spainhour opened up the game with a bankshot. Furr made a quick pass to Goodson who was waiting under the basket and put the ball in to bring the score to 4-2 early in the game.
North Surry stole the ball and drove down the court for a shot, which tied the game up 4-4.
Furr and Tanner Lomax both had threes late in the first quarter, which brought the Wildcats up 21-6.
Rawleigh started the second quarter by going two-for-two on two trips to the charity stripe. Then he broke away for two layups. With about a minute to go before halftime, Rawleigh drained a three from downtown to help put the Wildcats ahead by a margin of 35 points.
At halftime, the Wildcats were firmly in the lead 45-10.
Furr tipped one into the basket to start the third quarter. Then he went on to sink two 3-pointers - only moments apart.
Spencer Hensley came off the bench to help out as some of West Stokes’ tired players came off the court. Hensley drove in for a layup, which brought the score to 61-16 late in the third.
By the beginning of the final quarter, the Wildcats were riding high with a 47-point lead.
Then, Hensley swished a three from behind the arc.
The Wildcats sailed away with a 70-24 victory in the first round of conference tournament play.
The team will face off against East Surry in the second round of the conference tournament on Tuesday night at North Surry High School at 7:45 p.m.
