For the second time this season, the Wildcats varsity boys team came out and the beat Sauras - this time on their home court at South Stokes High School on Friday night. The Wildcats handed the Sauras a 61-43 loss for the evening.


The Sauras were ahead 7-6 late in the first quarter, but the Wildcats took back the lead 10-9 in the final seconds.


The two teams kept it fairly close in the second quarter, with a score of 31-26.


At halftime, the Wildcats were up by five points.


In the third quarter, the Sauras began to fall behind, as the Wildcats went up 47-35.


Wildcat Josh Spainhour opened up the final quarter with a 3-pointer. Minutes later, Alston Furr was flying high with a slam dunk, which had Wildcat fans cheering loudly. The Wildcats took the win for the evening 61-43.


“South Stokes played well,” Wildcats Coach Dan Spainhour said. “They defended really well.”


But, Spainhour said his team played better in the second half.


“We moved the ball much better,” he said.


Girls


The Lady Wildcats, who were beaten earlier in the season by Sauras, had their revenge on Friday night. After a seven point deficit at the half, the Wildcats came back to beat the Sauras 59-42.


The Sauras came out strong against and grabbed a 10-8 lead, after a 3-pointer from Michala Purdue in the final minutes of the first quarter.


In the second quarter, Lady Sauras captain Hannah Wood drained three treys in a span of about two minutes to help put the team ahead 25-18.


However, after halftime, the Lady Wildcats came back to the court like a different team.


Lady Wildcat Makala Bozman, who had trouble breaking through for shots in the first half, started to find her groove. Taylor McKinney put up two to tie the score up 32-32.


By the end of the third quarter, the Wildcats had pulled away for the lead 39-36.


Wildcats Bozman and Chris Madigan kept it cool on the stripe in the final quarter to help the team stay ahead and grab a 59-42 win for the evening.


The Lady Wildcats were 20-29 on the charity stripe - some of the team’s best free-throw shooting of the season.


The top scorers for the Lady Wildcats were Bozman (20 pts.), Madigan (12 pts.) and Abby Harris (11 pts.). The Top scorers for the Lady Sauras were Kelli Mounce (12 pts.), Michala Purdue (11 pts.) and Hannah Wood (11 pts.).
