A two-story home was destroyed on Amostown Road after a fire started Sunday night while the owner was away.

Frankie Burcham, Stokes County fire marshal, said a passerby noticed fire at a house located at 2265 Amostown Road, Sandy Ridge. The owner had been watching the Super Bowl with friends up the road, Burcham said.

Fire crews responded just before midnight, but the two-story wood frame house was a total loss. The home was well over 50 years old, said Burcham, and the only things left standing were two chimneys on either end of the house.

Burcham said firefighters probably worked five hours or more at the scene. Northeast Stokes Fire and Rescue was aided by departments from Danbury, Lawsonville and Rockingham.

The Red Cross assisted the displaced resident.

Burcham said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
