The Wildcat swim team headed to the 1A/2A Regional Swimming Championships at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club on Friday, Feb. 1. Although West Stokes’ athletes did not take home any titles for the day, the team put up strong times against top swimmers from across the region.

Wildcat Sam Stevenson finished in 14th place in the 200-yard medley with a time of two minutes and 35 seconds.

Stevenson followed up with an 18th place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of six minutes and 14 seconds.

Robbie Scoville and Josh Zolnerowickz finished in 21st and 22nd places in the 100-yard butterfly stroke, with times just over one minute.

Scoville, joined by Dylan Turner, Sam Elter and David Hughart, grabbed a 21st place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of one minute and 48 seconds.

Zolnerowickz, Hughart, Stevenson and Scoville combined in the 400-yard freestyle relay to grab a 21st place finish, with a time just a shave over four minutes.

“All the kids did absolutely incredible,” Wildcats Coach Justin Plummer said. “They came out flying high. The regional meet could not have gone any better.”

Plummer said that this year’s trip to regionals will be a “launching point for next year.” He hopes that next year the team will make it to the state meet.

Except for the team’s seniors, Plummer expects that the majority of the team will return to swim next season.
