Instances of severe weather over the past few weeks have caused the school system to adjust its schedule. Now schools will have a makeup day on Feb. 18

Last Friday schools closed at 9 a.m. and all activities were cancelled for the day after snow and sleet arrived earlier than anticipated. County government offices were closed on Friday as well. Then schools operated under a delay Monday morning due to a forecast for freezing rain.

A winter weather advisory was issued by the National Weather Service last Friday and remained in effect until 9 p.m. Sleet covered the streets in ice, but EMS Director Greg Collins said there were no major issues from an emergency standpoint. There were a few bump-ups.

The week prior, heavy rains turned into a snowfall of one to two inches, causing schools to let out two hours early on Thursday, Jan. 17 and to close that Friday. That closure led to the makeup day on Presidents’ Day.

The Jan. 17 snowfall did not cause many problems, either, Collins said. Emergency responders were called out to a few minor accident just after dark when the snow started.
