Stokes County began preparing Thursday morning for a winter storm.

Stokes County Schools will dismiss two hours early on Thursday, and afternoon and evening activities have been canceled. The announcement was posted mid-morning. More information about the school system’s policy on closings and delays can be found online at www.stokes.k12.nc.us/closings.html.

Economic development officials decided Thursday morning to postpone the popular Stokes County Business Extravaganza until Tuesday, Jan. 22 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Camp Hanes.

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va., issued a winter storm warning for southern Virginia and northwest North Carolina, including Stokes County. The warning is in effect from noon Thursday until 1 a.m. Friday. Rain is expected to transition to heavy, wet snow in the afternoon with accumulation of 3 to 6 inches expected across the region.

Send your pictures and videos of winter weather to mevans@civitasmedia.com and they could appear in a lead story on the website. Select photos may also be printed in next week’s edition of The Stokes News.
