SPFC meeting — The next meeting of the Stokes Partnership for Children North Carolina Pre-Kindergarten Committee will be held in the Stokes Partnership for Children Conference Room, 151 Jefferson Church Road, King, on Jan. 10 at 3:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Project Uth 360 — Project Uth 360 will hold its next general meeting on Jan. 10 at 6:15 p.m. The group will be talking about its next steps, as well as beginning planning for the summer activity camp. The group will meet at the Walnut Cove Public Library. The community is welcome to attend.

Sat., Jan. 19

Quiz Bowl — The annual Northwestern Regional Library Quiz Bowl will be held Jan. 19 at 9:30 a.m. at the Andy Griffith Playhouse in Mount Airy. Quiz Bowl is an annual academic competition between high school teams who complete in subjects including language, social studies, arts, science, and current events. Quiz Bowl is sponsored by the 13 libraries of the Northwestern Regional Library in Alleghany, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin counties as well as the Elkin Friends of the Library and Mount Airy Friends of the Library. This year the 10 teams competing include East Surry High School, Elkin High School, Mount Airy High School, North Surry High School, South Stokes High School, Starmount High School, Surry Central High School, Stokes Early College, Surry Early College, and Yadkin Early College. The program is free and open to the public.

Sun., Jan. 20

History program — On Jan. 20th at 2 p.m. in the Walnut Cove Public Library, the Stokes County Historical Society will present “The Sauratown Woman and Upper Sauratown.” This program will be conducted by Dr. Stephen Davis Jr., associate director of Research Laboratories of Archaeology for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a college student at Chapel Hill, Dr. Davis was involved in the archaeological dig at the Upper Saura Town Site in the early 1970’s. This was the site where the “Sauratown Woman” or “Princess” was found. From her remains and extensive research her likeness was reconstructed for display at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh. Her likeness is one of three bronze statutes that grace the entrance to the Museum of History. Dr. Davis has devoted his life’s work on early Native American history of the American South. Free and open to the public.

Tobacco vote — A check-off referendum will be held on Jan. 23. Flue-cured tobacco growers will vote on their continuance of their support of the self-help plan of promoting flue-cured tobacco by Tobacco Associates, Inc., for the marketing years 2013, 2014, and 2015. The referendum will include the question of continuance of the authorization of annual assessments not to exceed one-fifth of one cent per pound. The Stokes County polling location is located at 700 N. Main St. in Danbury (the Cooperative Extension office). Ongoing Events

Pesticide class — Two opportunities for Private Pesticide Applicators to fulfill the requirement for 2 hours of V continuing education credits will be offered at the Stokes County Cooperative Extension office in January. The classes will be offered on Jan. 10 from 1-3 p.m. and on Jan. 24 from 9-11 a.m. There is no charge to attend the class but advanced registration is requested. Donations — Donations for Sandy Hook Elementary School (Newtown, CT) are being collected at the Walnut Cove Public Library through January 19. Basic school supplies are needed: pencils, erasers, lunchboxes, notebooks, lunchboxes, books, etc.
