Just a few days into January, many people may already be struggling to keep their New Years resolutions.

“The New Year is a time for new beginnings, new goals,” said Tiffany Boyles, wellness director at Stokes Family YMCA.

Weight loss and physical improvement often top the list of goals, but Boyles noted that many people try to set unreasonable goals to start.

“You want it and you want it all right away,” she said. But she reminds people that they did not put on excess weight or get out of shape overnight.

“Making small changes can lead to big benefits over time,” she tells people.

If someone has not been working out at all and sets a goal to go to the gym four or five days a week, they may get discouraged if they have a hard time meeting the goal.

“Take baby steps and build on that and that would be the better approach,” said Boyles.

For many, a good starting point is getting a body composition and fitness assessment. A basic body assessment is offered at the Y for $5, and a more in-depth fitness assessment is offered for $15.

“It’s a great tool for those getting started with a workout program or who want to confirm their level of fitness,” Boyles noted.

Finding friends to workout with is often a good motivator for people. “It’s that responsibility and accountability,” said Derek Edwards, executive director of the Y.

“Finding an accessible time” is often a roadblock for people, Edwards said. He noted that the Stokes Family Y facility opens early and closes late most days.

Boyles said, “I think people are not putting theirself first enough.” She said many people run their kids to school and various activities and do household work and take care of relatives but do not take time to keep themselves in shape.

Edwards said, “If you don’t take care of yourself you can’t take care of others.”

And Boyles tells people that a workout does not have to last an hour or an hour and a half. Just getting to the gym, even if for only 30 minutes, is a great start.

“You’ve just gotta get that habit built,” said Edwards. “Once you do, it’s hard to break.”

For those who do not have a Y membership, a special “Pay the Day” discount is offered in January. While the joining fee is typically $49, through January the joining fee is equal to the day of the month. So if you sign up on the 3rd, the fee is $3. It would be $4 on the 4th, and so on.

Though weight loss is a top goal for many people, Boyles reminds people that “building and maintaining family connections is one of the most important resolutions.”

“We’re a family friendly facility,” added Edwards.

A lot of people do not know what to do when they walk in the Y for the first time, Boyles noted, but wellness coaches are available to help give orientations.

“They’re not by themselves,” said Edwards of new members.

Last year the Stokes Y celebrated its 15th anniversary, and this year the busy Y plans to offer even more programs.

The Y has a pool, gyms, workout center, community room, nursery, racquetball rooms and other facilities, but it also has a variety of fitness and wellness programs and services. The gym now has eight personal trainers, and a certified personal trainer in the pool as well.

Many specialty courses will begin in January, which often charge $75 for members or $125 for non-members. They typically meet a couple of times a week for eight weeks. Boot Camp will begin on Jan. 8 and offers a group setting and various methods of training.

“Get on Your Weigh” is the Y’s annual 12-week weight management program designed for overweight adults at novice or beginning fitness levels. It consists of a weekly group workout in groups of typically six to eight people who meet with a trainer. The program also includes bi-weekly measurements, nutrition sessions with a dietitian, and pre- and post-program cholesterol screenings. The program begins on Feb. 12. Those who register in January receive a discount.

The Y is excited about a new group exercise class launching. The Les Mills Body Pump is a “breakthrough in resistance workout training,” Boyles said. The program rolls out on Jan. 28, and the cost is included in the monthly Y membership fee.

The fourth annual Feed Stokes 5K will take place on Saturday, March 9 at Recreation Acres in King to benefit King Outreach Ministry. The Y can help people get prepared with a training course that will begin on Jan. 14 and take place twice a week.

Spartan Sprint Training will start on Jan. 28 and meet twice a week. The training prepares people for a muddy 3-plus mile run with 15-plus obstacles.

Other activities are offered such as racquetball, swim lessons, and new scuba diving lessons. The Y plans on holding an indoor triathlon on March 3. A self-defense course will be offered on Jan. 12 for a fee, and a boxing program will begin soon and meet on Saturdays.
