Sauras nab 61-54 win against Cardinals
The South Stokes varsity boys took home a 61-54 win on the road in last week’s game against the East Surry Cardinals. The Sauras came out with intensity and led 36-27 at halftime.
The Cards edged ahead by two points in the third and then the two teams battled for the lead in the final moments of the game. East Surry fought to jump ahead in the final quarter, but the team struggled.
The Sauras posted some big plays in the final moments of the game that allowed the team to stay ahead. The team finished the night with a 61-54 win and improved to 7-3 overall.
In a game against North Surry on Dec. 14, the Lady Sauras struggled to make their shots and were handed a 53-17 loss. Last Friday night, however, the Lady Sauras played better than in recent weeks.
The Cards grabbed the lead early in the game. After the first quarter, the Cards led 20-12. However, the Lady Sauras rallied to keep the game tight and outscored the Cards 11-6 in the second quarter.
At the half, the Sauras trailed by only three points — 26-23.
The third quarter was a close one. The Lady Sauras racked up eight points, while the Cards went on to score 11. In the final quarter, the Cards jumped away with the win, scoring a total of 21 points.
“We were down by six going into the fourth and just couldn’t mount a comeback,” Coach Mitch Adams said. “East Surry’s size gave us fits all night.”
Adams said he was really impressed with his team’s “effort” and “competitiveness” on the court. Still, he said his team missed some easy scoring opportunities that could have brought the team ahead.
The top scorers for the Lady Sauras were Hannah Wood (17 pts.), Kelli Mounce (13 pts.) and Samantha Hill (6 pts.).
The Lady Sauras are now 6-4 overall.
