Communities In Schools has received $2,500 from the Food Lion Charitable Foundation just in time for the holiday season to help local residents. Communities In Schools will use the gift to support the expansion of the Stokes School Pantry.

Renee Oglesby, executive director, stated, “We are so appreciative of such a generous donation as it could not have come at a better time as the holiday season approaches and more and more families are in need during this time of year.”

The mission of Communities In Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. This donation will assist its efforts to provide healthy and nutritional food to families in need. Leaders say children who are not hungry tend to be more attentive and will therefore do better in school.

Established in 2001, the Food Lion Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding the hungry in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $9 million in grants.
