At 9:38 a.m. Friday morning — one week to the minute after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut — Stokes County residents will observe a moment of silence at a special memorial service in King.

The memorial service will begin around 9 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 21, at the King Christmas tree in Central Park, located near the cabin entrance. The event is open to the public and has been planned by a few Stokes County residents who wanted to give the community a chance to remember and honor the 20 children and six adults who were killed.

Alena Bates, who is spearheading the effort, said the event will take place rain or shine. People are encouraged to bring signs, memorials, or other items to leave around the Christmas tree in memory of the victims. People can also bring their own candle to light or a balloon to release. The service will conclude with the moment of silence.

Bates said a permit was obtained for the event, and the memorial site will be available for anyone to visit during the regular park hours from Dec. 21 to 31.

More information can be found on Facebook under an event titled “ANGELS of Sandy Hook Elementary Sch Memorial Service.”
