WINSTON-SALEM - South Stokes had a tough start to the conference season in Friday night’s games against Winston-Salem Prep. Neither the varsity girls or boys team could pull out a win against the Phoenix.
The Lady Sauras fell 50-30 in their conference season opener. They kept the score to a tight 13-10 in the first quarter, but the Phoenix began to fly away with the game in the second quarter.
By halftime, the Phoenix had taken a 28-13 lead over the Sauras. W-S Prep used their height and speed to their advantage and grabbed the win for the evening.
Lady Phoenix Head Coach Jonathan Gainey said they were “fortunate” to start the conference season with a win.
Lady Sauras Head Coach Mitch Adams said that Prep is a “strong” team. “We just weren’t ready for them,” he said.
The Sauras varsity boys team did not have any luck, either. The Sauras were down by 16 points by the end of the first quarter.
By halftime, the Phoenix were up 36-14. Head Coach Jason Clark urged his team to play “strong” and “pick their heads up” during a rousing halftime speech, but the Phoenix continued their reign on the court in the third quarter.
Phoenix Aaron Lipscomb made the 3-pointers rain all night. He racked up three in the third quarter alone, which helped to push the team further ahead 69-30.
By the fourth quarter, the Phoenix were riding high with nearly a 40-point lead. They coasted out of the game with a 85-43 win over the Sauras for the evening.
Clark said that the Sauras played “hard” against one of the toughest teams in the conference. “We will get better,” he said.
