The Sauras are off to a good start this wrestling season and have already racked up some wins.
The Sauras took home wins against the Alleghany Trojans and the Rockingham Cougars in a tri-match last week hosted at South Stokes High School. The Sauras narrowly defeated the Trojans 31-30 and claimed a 54-30 victory over the Cougars.
Last weekend, the Sauras also took top spots in the Blackhawk Invitational Tournament hosted by West Wilkes High School. South Stokes finished in sixth place overall in the tournament.
Top finishers in the tournament were Christian Artis, who finished in third place in the 182-pound weight division; Evan Scott, who won a third place finish (220 lbs.); Morgan Bagley came in first place in the 138-pound weight division; John Kevin Fischer, who finished in fourth place (126 lbs.); and T.J. Whaley, who finished in third place (160 lbs.). The Sauras finished in sixth place overall in the tournament.
Sauras Head Coach Tim Lawson said that he was pleased with the top place finishes of some of his wrestlers, but the team finish was “disappointing.”
“I feel like if we did what we could have done, we could have easily finished in the top three or four,” he said. “I feel like we have much room for improvement.”
South Stokes vs. Alleghany and Rockingham
The Sauras started out slow in last week’s tri-match against the Trojans and Cougars. The Trojans quickly claimed the lead in the early matches.
But, things began to turn around as several Sauras began to grab some points for the team. Morgan Bagley wrestled with Trojans’ Ernest Shaw in the 138-point weight class and came close to pinning him in the third period and won by decision, which added four points to the board.
Saura Matt Poss followed up with another win by decision. T.J. Whaley pinned his opponent late in the third period, which added six points to the board. With these wins, the Sauras were able to push ahead and grab the lead. They narrowly took the lead over the Trojans 31-30.
The Sauras took some tough lickings to start the matchup against the Cougars. Several Sauras in the lower weight divisions were pinned in their matchups, which allowed the Cougars to grab an early lead. However, the Sauras hit a string of wins later in the match that helped them chalk up some points.
Saura John Kevin Fischer cradled Cougar Tyler Cundiff and pinned him to the mat in the third period with only seconds left. Bagley followed up with a pin and added another six points to the scoreboard. These wins help to even the score against the Cougars.
Late in the match that evening, the Saura heavy weights came in to clean up. Whaley, Christian Artis, and Evan Scott all came out strong and pinned their opponents in the first period. These late match wins allowed the Sauras to come out on top with a 54-30 win for the evening.
