Health department promotes National Influenza Vaccination Week
The Stokes County Health Department is partnering with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to promote National Influenza Vaccination Week, which is observed Dec. 2-8 this year.
National Influenza Vaccination Week provides an opportunity to remind everyone six months and older that it is not too late to get a flu vaccine. CDC reports a yearly average of more than 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths related to the flu, but by getting your flu vaccine you can prevent the spread of influenza this season, health officials say.
Flu vaccines are available at the Stokes County Health Department from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. No appointment is necessary, and walk-ins are welcome. If you do not have health insurance, Stokes County Health Department will offer the flu shot free of charge, while supplies last. Please call 336-593-2400 if you have any questions.
In addition to vaccination, the health department encourages people to continue practicing good health habits to prevent the spread of flu viruses:
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into the upper part of your sleeve, not your hands. This is how you spread germs.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective, but washing with warm soapy water is more effective.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
• Stay home if you’re sick. You should stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone, except to get medical care or for other necessities. Your fever should be gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine.
