Friday, Nov. 30 — 7 p.m. – City of King will hold a Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at King Central Park. The West Stokes High School Band will begin playing Christmas music at 6:30 p.m. Santa will be in the Spainhour Cabin to visit and take pictures with children (please bring your own camera). Light refreshments and a chicken stew will be served free of charge.

Saturday, Dec. 1 — 2 p.m. — Annual Christmas Parade in downtown King. The Stokes County Arts Council will sponsor the 2012 King Christmas Parade. The theme is “Let It Snow.” Applications may be found online at stokesarts.org or one may request an application by contacting the Stokes County Arts Council at 336-593-8159. Shannon Smith with Fox 8 News will be the grand marshal for this year’s parade. Rain date for the parade is Dec. 8 at 10:30 a.m.

Sunday, December 2 — 12:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. — Mitchell’s Nursery & Greenhouse located at 1088 W. Dalton Rd. in King is hosting a National Poinsettia Display. They are growing over 8,000 poinsettias with 80 different kinds. Come see an amazing greenhouse full of red, white, burgundy, jingle bells, and a mixture of these. Some even have double blooms. Thursday, Dec. 6 — 6 p.m. — Hospice & Palliative CareCenter Walnut Cove will host a Memorial Tree Ceremony and Reception for Families at Recreation Acres Community Building located at 107 White Road in King. The Hospice Memorial Tree is decorated with ornaments lovingly crafted and assembled by Hospice volunteers. Each ornament bears the name of a Hospice & Palliative CareCenter patient who died during the past year. Friday, Dec. 7 — 5-9 p.m. — Downtown Shopping Night. The King Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a special Christmas Shopping Night. Store owners are encouraged to observe the extended hours and offer some special product or discount. The Chamber has space for vendors inside our office for the evening for $15. SWEET POTATO COBBLER

2 ½ cup water

1 ½ cup sugar

1 cup margarine

Cinnamon to taste

1 box yellow cake mix

2 to 3 sweet potatoes

Peel and thinly slice sweet potatoes and place in a 9”x 13” baking dish. Add water, sugar, and spoon half of melted margarine. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Sprinkle dry cake mix over mixture. Spoon 1/2 cup melted margarine over cake mix. Bake at 275 degrees for 1 hour and 30 minutes. If top is not browned, turn broil on for seconds to get top brown.

ICE BOX COOKIES

1 cup white sugar

1 cup brown sugar

1 stick margarine

One-half cup shortening

2 eggs

3 and one half cups sifted plain flour

2 tsp soda

One half tsp salt

1 tsp vanilla

1 cup chopped nuts

Cream butter and shortening (at room temperature) with sugar. Add eggs, add salt when sifting the flour. Combine the sugar mixture with flour. Add flavoring and nuts last. Mix with hands and make into two long rolls. Wrap in wax paper and chill in refrigerator until wanted. Cut thin and cook at 375 degrees just long enough to brown.

HINT: Make roll and place on wax paper and hold wax paper (using two sheets of paper so it won’t tear) on each side and roll until smooth.

These cookies will keep in the refrigerator for a long time and can be baked when you have a hot oven.
