The Salvation Army is asking for the community’s support to help make Christmas brighter for children living in Stokes County. This year, The Salvation Army anticipates it will serve more than 650 children in Stokes County. In order to meet this need, The Salvation Army is asking the community for their support.

Here’s how you can help:

• Donate a new toy and or clothing for children ages 12 and under.

• Fill a stocking. Stocking displays are located at county libraries, Town and Country Restaurant, and Sam’s Pizza.

• Donate non-perishable food items.

• Volunteer.

• Give a monetary gift.

Donations can be dropped off every weekday between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. at DSS locations through Dec. 7. Donations can also be dropped off at The Salvation Army’s distribution center beside Shannock’s Music and Pawn Shop at the King Shopping Center on Saturdays, Dec. 1 and 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Tuesdays, Dec. 4 and 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. Pickup of large group donations of toys, stockings, food and clothing can be arranged by calling 336-723-6366.

Financial Support for The Salvation Army can be made to: The Salvation Army, Stokes County Christmas Services, P.O. Box 362, King, NC 27021.

“While The Salvation Army works diligently to do the most good with the resources we are given, we have faith the community will continue to support us so we can help our neighbors in need again this Christmas season,” said Major James Allison, area commander for The Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army has been operating its Stokes County Service Unit since 1985. It runs in conjunction with the Stokes County Department of Social Services, King Outreach Ministry and East Stokes Outreach Ministry to provide emergency assistance such as rent and utility payments and emergency lodging. Hundreds of Stokes County families are helped with emergency needs each year by The Salvation Army, a United Fund participating agency.

The Salvation Army, an International movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. The Salvation Army was established in Winston-Salem in 1907 and serves more than 35,000 people in Forsyth, Davie, Stokes and Yadkin counties each year. The Salvation Army offers many programs including the only emergency shelter for homeless families in Winston-Salem, the only on-site breakfast feeding program in the community, a travel assistance program, and a program in conjunction with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools to purchase new shoes for school age children called Happy Feet.
