The Stokes County Arts Council is accepting applications now for the 2013 Living Storybook drama classes. All drama classes will be taught by Peter Holland, the director of Once Upon a Blue Ridge, a touring professional theatre company.
Holland brings a professional, practical approach to the teaching of young people, say Arts Council leaders. He believes that young people should be taught to “love the art in themselves, not themselves in the art.” In all of the classes every child is given a moment to shine. The love and devotion that students have to the Storybook program is a testimony to the quality of his direction.
Registration and the first class will be held Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at King Recreation Acres, 107 White Road, King. The following classes will be offered beginning January 9, 2013 and will continue once a week every Wednesday evening through March 20th (unless inclement weather extends schedule):
• 5-6 p.m. – Creative Dramatics (for students 6-8 years old). Creative play, movement, puppets, improvisation, the fundamentals of acting and characterization. The emphasis is on unlocking creativity and positively expressing feelings.
• 6:10-7:10 p.m. – Basics of Acting (for students 9-11 years old). Improvisation, movement, script study, character building, vocal projection, articulation. Experienced students will be given additional material to work on outside of class.
• 7:20-8:30 p.m. – Advanced Acting (for students age 12-teens). Students will be assigned scenes in class and will learn to analyze characters, identify transitions, and recognize different styles of drama. Units on directing and playwriting will be taught and students will be given a chance to practice their directing or playwriting skills.
Classes will culminate in a recital for family and friends.
