Mrs. Hester Irene S. Boyles, of 4365 N. Shannon Road, died Saturday, November 10, 2012, in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital at the age of 93.

Mrs. Boyles was born in Stokes County to the late Windfield and Sarah Jones Setliff. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold A. Boyles, and three brothers and three sisters. She was a member of Antioch Presbyterian Church where she received the Presbyterian Women Honorary Life Membership in 2002. Mrs. Boyles enjoyed serving her family and community through baking desserts and sharing her gifts with others.

Survivors include two daughters, Carole Elkins (Cliff) of Lexington, S.C., and Jane McGugan (Danny) of Shannon, N.C.; two sons, Johnny Boyles of Fayetteville, N.C., and Michael Boyles (Joyce) of Apex, N.C.; a sister, Verna Lea Allen of King; eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Interment was 2 p.m., Monday, November 12, 2012, at Raeford Cemetery.

The family received relatives and friends between the hours of 9:30 and 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at Antioch Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall.

Funeral service was at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. David Hudson and CRE Herman T. Autry officiating.

Mr. Jerry Vester Farrington, 64, of Dobson, passed away on Tuesday, November 6, 2012, at Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home. He was born on February 13, 1948, in Baltimore County, Md., to the late Wayne Minton Farrington and Grace Elizabeth Doss Farrington.


Mr. William H. “Bill” Johnson, 86, of Greensboro, passed away Saturday, November 10, 2012.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at First Baptist Church. Burial followed at Westminster Gardens.

A native of Stokes County, Mr. Johnson was the son of Harvey and Eva Johnson. He graduated Valedictorian from King High School in 1942 and then attended Mars Hill Junior College. In 1943 he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Air Corps during World War II. After the military, Mr. Johnson earned a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from N.C. State University in 1949.

He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Barnabas Sunday School Class where he served as treasurer. He was a retired engineer supervisor for Western Electric (AT&T) with 40 years of service. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club O. Henry Chapter serving as president and treasurer. He was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and a member of I.E.E.E. He enjoyed N.C. State football and basketball and was an avid attendee of the Greensboro Symphony and the N.C. State Friends of College Classical Music Symphony.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 54 years, Elanda “Leah” Johnson; and a sister, Ruth Johnson.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his children, Kay Raxter (Hugh) of Montgomery, Ala., Jane Stine (Kenneth) of Apex, Linda Parrott (Tim) of Greensboro; sister, Betty J. Kauffman of Winston-Salem; brother, Richard Wade Johnson of King; and grandchildren, Dana Raxter Grimstad (Barry) of Auburn, Ala., Tracy Parrott of Charlotte, Jeff Parrott of Blowing Rock and Will Stine of Apex.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 1000 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27401 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3800 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, NC 28215-3220, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Myona Ruth Lowry Rutherford, 89, formerly of Cave-In-Rock, Ill., died Thursday morning, November 8, 2012, at Stokes County Nursing Home in Danbury.

She was born July 3, 1923, in Hardin County, Ill., to Joseph Franklin and Ollie L. Lowry and was the last to survive of nine children. She was a member of Buena Vista Community Church of Harrisburg, Ill., where she was a very active member and Sunday School teacher while residing in Illinois. She was very family oriented and loved her family, brothers, sisters, children, and grandchildren. Mrs. Rutherford loved to play guitar, piano and sing and was an active and fun loving lady as long as her health allowed. During WWII, she was a “Rosie the Riveter,” building bombers at Willow Run Airport in Michigan, doing her part in the war effort.

The family received friends from 12-2 p.m., Monday, November 12, 2012, at Rose-Gilbert Funeral Home, 44 Canal Street, Cave-In-Rock, Ill. A graveside service followed immediately at Cave Hill Cemetery, Cave-In-Rock, Ill., with the Rev. G.E. Coultas officiating.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter C. Rutherford; four sisters, Florence Rosella Lowry, Belva Lowry, Thelma Lowry, Eula W. Lowry; four brothers, Lawrence Lowry, James Jack Lowry, Mansel R. Lowry and John L. Lowry.

She is survived by two children, Sharon Nelson and husband Michael of Walnut Cove, and Walter Joseph Rutherford of Kernersville; three grandchildren, David (Diane) Nelson of New York, John (Holly) Nelson of Oak Ridge, Chris Brees of Michigan; and numerous great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Stokes County Nursing Home Activities Department, P.O. Box 10, Danbury, NC 27016.

Mr. Dylan Thomas Tharp, 30, passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2012, at Daytona Beach, Fla. Arrangements are being handled by Cox Needham Funeral Home in Danbury.
