The Calvary Cougars participated in the NCCSA State Championship Tournament Oct. 26-27. Calvary versus Cornerstone was one of the toughest games to date.
The Cougars scored early and held a 1-0 lead going into the half. The second half was almost the same until toward the very end when Cornerstone got one by the Cougars and tied up the game 1-1. The teams then played two 10-minute overtime halfs. When that was done, and the score was still 1-1, they went to penalty kicks.
Cornerstone started off first and Calvary goalie Evan Keeton blocked the first penalty kick. Calvary made the next three, giving the Cougars 4 points; however, Cornerstone made the next four kicks and beat Calvary with a score of 5-4.
The next day Calvary Cougars played for third place in the state against Tri-City. The Calvary Cougars went out with a solemn determination and easily won 4-1, winning third place in the NCCSA State Championship.
“I am very pleased with our team,” Coach Salter said. “We finished up third in state with a 14-4 record.”
