The third annual Red Hawks Gathered Nations City of King PowWow is scheduled for August 15-17 at American Legion Post 290, King Fairgrounds in King. Participants are members of the Seneca, Mohawk, Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga, Tuscarora, Lenape, Delaware, Cherokee, Lakota, Apache, Cheyenne, Modoc, Blackfoot, Shawnee, Prairie Band Potowatomi, Comanche, Choctaw, and Ojibway Nations, Bands and Tribes.

Event activities include a Veterans Ceremony; four traditional drum groups—Northern Host drum group Iroquois Thunderheart and Southern Host Drum group Red Bird Juniors; two secondary drum groups—one from Cherokee and one from the Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy. Bill Crouse and the Allegheny River Indian Dancers (from the Seneca Allegheny Reserve in New York State) will perform. They specialize in Iroquois social songs, the Smoke Dance and the Hoop Dance.

Over 12 different styles of Pow Wow dances will be performed throughout the event. One of this year’s storytellers is Robert Roach, Lakota, and his companion Niko, a Timberwolf. Our American Indian artists and crafters give demonstrations throughout the event. Other activities include Native speakers, historians, flute players, Native food, shopping, live war ponies and various raffles including a 15-foot tipi. All proceeds from tipi raffle go to the King American Legion.
