Everyone enjoyed a delicious dinner served by the members.
A memorial service was conducted by the post and auxiliary chaplains, Don Adams and Brigitte Creeson. The unit everlasting auxiliary members who passed away during the year were Sandra Konst, Darlene McKinney, Lib Talley, Minnie Tuttle and Hazel White.
The post everlasting legionnaires who were recognized were Charles Ballard, Henry Ellis Boyles, Alfred Cibor, Robert Davis, K. M. Gordon, Elbert Kiser, Marcus Kiser, Howard Mabe, Homer Pratt, Otis Priddy, Edgar Seeley, Max Simpson, Vernon Snider, William Southern, Sr., Harold Tuttle, and Paul Ballard.
The commander, Bennett, recognized the special guest.
Barbara Hunsucker, president, announced that the Unit received several awards at the state meeting in June. King Auxiliary is the third largest unit in North Carolina. Some of the projects completed this year were: sent 13 girls to Girls State, helped with new veterans home in Salisbury, made fruit baskets, sold poppies, participated in Christmas parade, was active in the community, helped Post with Stokes County Fair, and supported all legion affairs. The motto is “Service and not self.” President Hunsucker thanked all the auxiliary members and legion members for all their help during the year.
Jane Epperson, 18th District President, installed the officers for the year. They are: Barbara Hunsucker, president; Cathy Saunders, first vice president; Joanne Rollinson, second vice president; Tammy Hatley, recording secretary; Jane Epperson, assistant recording secretary; Brigitte Barton, corresponding secretary; Iris Bennett, treasurer; Janet Calloway, assistant treasurer; Brigitte Creeson, chaplain; Deborah Robertson, assistant chaplain; Kathleen Mendenhall, historian; Mable White, sergeant-at-arms; Mary Moser, poppy chairman; Jane Epperson, membership and Girls State.
The Post 290 officers were installed by Coley A. Hunsucker. They were Lane Bennett, commander; Stan Simmons, first vice commander; Dempsey Lilly, second vice commander; Paul Loftis, adjutant; Bill Guraleczka, assistant adjutant; Coley A. Hunsucker, finance officer; Frank Martin, assistant finance officer; Danny Bowen, chaplain; Don Adams and Mack Kiser, assistant chaplain; Tim Ledford, judge advocate; R. L. Calloway, sergeant-at-arms; Mike Cumbie, historian; H. P. Patterson, service officer; C. D. Hooker and Rupert Hall, assistant service officers; Dempsey Lilly, one-year trustee; Pete Epperson, two-year trustee; Darrell Adkins, three-year trustee; Frank Martin, Jack Warren, and Dean Hartgrove, members at large.
The commander announced they have 556 members. Some projects during the year have been the City of King sign, helped at VA hospitals, sent five boys to Boys State, sent three to trooper school in Raleigh, conducted over 40 veterans’ funerals, put flags on veterans’ graves memorial weekend, sponsored Stokes County Fair, helped with Boy Scout troops, fixed fruit boxes, participated in PowWow, bull ride, and bingo, made medical equipment available, and helped with dog trail, cowboy church, and other projects.
