July 2007
Roy Adkins was sentenced to up to 56 years in prison for first-degree rape, first-degree sexual offense, first-degree burglary, first-degree kidnapping, second-degree burglary and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The town of Walnut Cove passed an ordinance limiting assemblies. The ordinance came shortly after groups from Baux Mountain Baptist Church had been preaching on the streets in Walnut Cove on Saturdays.
August 2007
The Walnut Cove Board of Commissioners made adjustments to the assembly ordinance that was passed in July. The board learned from Town Attorney Kevin Berger that parts of the ordinance contained restrictions that are not legal. The board was met by a record breaking crowd of area church members and citizens asking the board to strike the ordinance all together. The board voted to eliminate the fee charged to issue permits and also voted to remove the restriction on the number of permits that can be issued to one group. The board also voted to move the effective date to October 15.
The Walnut Cove Board of Commissioners voted to add liquor by the drink to the November ballot at its August meeting in a 3-1 vote.
Approximately 175 people were in attendance to voice their concerns about a controversial assemblies ordinance. The commissioners moved onto the new business section of the meeting around 10 p.m. when the board decided to table the ordinance until their September meeting. Most of the citizens in attendance left for the evening after three hours of public comments and debate concerning the ordinance.
Commissioner Polly Goolsby cast the dissenting vote.
Murder charges were brought against Jessica Walker Nash, 21, of King in the death of her husband.
On July 26, 2006, officers responded to a reported overdose at 213 Rock Haven Road in King, where 23-year-old Shannon-Wade Nash was found dead.
While looking into the incident, early on in the case, investigators were led to the possibility of foul play. The murder charges against Nash came as a result of more than a years investigation.
September 2007
The Walnut Cove Board of Commissioners made more amendments to the new assemblies and demonstrations ordinance. More than 100 residents of the town and surrounding areas came out to continue voicing their opposition to the ordinance, which they say is unconstitutional.
Ron Baity, pastor of Berean Baptist Churrcch and president of Return America, said that legal action was being sought against the Walnut Cove Town Board.
A Belews Creek man was sentenced to 11 to 15 years on drug convictions in Stokes County Superior Court. Barry Wayne Welch, 33, of 7870 Pine Hall Road was charged with the sell and delivery of cocaine.
The Stokes County Health Board suspended Health Director Don Moore with pay pending an investigation into alleged misconduct.
October 2007
Walnut Cove Commissioners voted to allow larger numbers of people to assemble in Walnut Cove before requiring a permit. This action came after a closed session meeting with the town attorney. The board voted to allow 15 people to assemble without a permit but 16 would require a permit.
Walnut Cove condemned the old Dehart dentist building for use as a town hall.
Thirteen Triad residents were arrested following a raid on a high stakes gambling business in Stokes County.
The arrests were made at 1065 Barnette Drive in Walnut Cove after officers received information that led them to believe a high stakes gambling business was being operated on the Barnette Farm.
Arrested were: Ricky Wayne Barnette, 48, Darold Theordore Baity, 67, Justin D. Baity, 18, Darrell Milton Boyd, Jr., 44, Tammy Anne Cooke, 47, Oliver Trent Cromer, 54, Thomas William Gilbert, Jr., 59, Bryan Matthew Gray, 22, Graham Otis Joyce, 87, Tony Gray Kirkman, 60, Sean Anthony Payne, 40, Farrell Gray Rutledge, 46, David Arnold Shelton, 64.
Stokes County Health Director Don Moore resigned his position following an investigation into allegations of misconduct by the Stokes County Health Board.
A Stokes County EMS team brought home a second straight EMS title. Fred Lawson and Scott Brown, Stokes County Paramedics competed in the state competition and won first place for the second year in a row.
November 2007
Walnut Cove voters rejected liquor by the drink by a 2-1. A new mayor and commissioner were elected with incumbent Polly Goolsby retaining her seat as commissioner. John Hodgkin was elected mayor, replacing Ken Starnes who chose to run for commissioner and lost that seat to Lora Carter, former Walnut Cove town clerk.
Dillard Burnette and Terri Fowler were elected as King City councilman. Mayor Jack Warren was unopposed.
Stewart Hobbs was named superintendent of Stokes County Schools. Hobbs had served as superintendent in Sampson County Schools since November 2003.
Holiday events kicked off in Stokes County with Christmas in Historic Danbury.
December 2007
Engineer recommends demolishing historic Nancy Reynolds School.
The county mourned the loss of a public servant. Howard Mabe died at age 80.
Danbury hikes water rates for second time. Residents and business owners will see an increase in water and sewer rates in the near future. The jump in cost for water will be the second for the 2007-08 fiscal year, which began July 1.
Twenty-five people were charged in a number of county drug cases following “Operation Fall Sweep.”
