The Stokes County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about counterfeit bills that have recently been circulating the area.
“We became aware of it when we had some brought into the jail,” said Sheriff Mike Marshall.
Marshall is asking citizens to take a moment and check the money they receive to make sure it is real currency.
“If you suspect it isn’t you should call a deputy or local law enforcement or contact your bank for an inspection. Passing counterfeit and fake money as U.S. currency is a crime,” he said. “These type of scams will look realistic, but don’t pass the marker test.”
Marshall added that his department will continue to be vigilant and strive to make sure citizens are not ripped off.
