West Stokes Lady Wildcats, ranked No. 6 in the 2A state polls, have advanced to the third round of the state playoffs for the third time in four years when they beat No. 24 seeded Maiden Blue Devils and No. 8 seeded West Central Eagles last week for another sweet sixteen appearance.

On Wednesday, the Cats hosted Maiden in the first round of the playoffs and won 7-1. Zoe Wehr led her team with three goals and two assists.

Wehr netted West’s first goal on an assist from Anna Bates. Seven minutes later Gracie Marvin put the Wildcats up 2-0 on an assist from Wehr. West added two more goals in the first half from Bates and Lovisa Fahraues with another assist from Wehr and Kirbi Hunter to lead 4-1.

In the second half, West scored three goals in the first fifteen minutes with two goals coming from Wehr and the other from Hunter. Assisting on the goals were Allie Hawkins with two from Fahraues.

In the second round game, the Wildcats traveled to Wilkes Central, the higher seed, and scored their 15th shutout of the season with a 4-0 victory over the Eagles.

Fahraues found Wehr for the first goal of the game at the 20 minute mark of the first half. Fahraues then found Micha Harris for another Wildcat goal and a 2-0 lead.

In the second half, Hawkins and Harris assisted Bates and Mackenzie Edwards on goals for another Wildcat victory.

West Stokes (21-3-1) will face Central Academy (15-8-1) for a second straight year in the playoffs. Last year the Cougars and Wildcats faced off in the fourth round with Central winning 1-0. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at West Stokes on Wednesday.
