The 23rd annual KingFest will take place at Central Park in King from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 6. Keep reading to learn more about the activities available at this year’s event.
Where do I park?
For the motorist who ventures down Kirby Road during the day on Oct. 6, it may appear that there is not an empty parking space anywhere near KingFest, but don’t worry. Calvary Baptist Church, First Baptist Church and King Elementary School have thoughtfully offered the use of their parking lots for overflow traffic. Churches including Chestnut Grove United Methodist, Quaker Gap Baptist and Calvary Baptist are also planning to provide shuttle service with their church vans or buses from the additional parking lots to the two park entrances throughout the day.
A warm welcome
Volunteers, visiting heritage demonstrators and KingFest staff will enjoy a warm and friendly “hometown” welcome at the Hospitality Tents on both sides of King Central Park sponsored by the King Lions Club, Christian Village Inc., Cannon & Co., and Mark Johnson, D.D.S., P.A.
Heavy Equipment Repair Cruise-In
Do you have a classic car that you have lovingly restored? Do you have a cherished family vehicle from the past or a unique motor vehicle? Bring your pride and joy to the Classic Cruise-In Car Show at KingFest sponsored by Heavy Equipment Repair, Inc. of King. Come share the enthusiasm for vintage vehicles with sponsors Glenn and Sandra Garrison, owners of Heavy Equipment Repair, Inc. Bring a chair and plan to spend the day enjoying the music and listening to the admiring “oohs” and “ahs” as you display your car. The first 100 to register will receive gift bags and commemorative dash plates and all will be eligible for some great gifts in the door prize drawings throughout the day. Car show participants should enter the park via Felts Drive between East Coast Wings and King International where KingFest personnel will direct you to the parking area on the grounds between the RJR Music Stage and the Veterans’ Memorial.
Ready, set, shop!
Vendors throughout the amphitheater area, along the paths and over by the cabin will make KingFest a shoppers’ paradise. From handcrafted treasures to vintage items to whimsical creations, there will be something for even the most particular of shoppers at KingFest. Along with a number of returning vendors and artisans, several new crafters will be offering their individually unique forms of art. Monty Stevens will be selling his inspiring landscape photographs framed and ready for hanging. Sarah Lazo will feature homemade rubs, dips and mixes for that gourmet touch, while Jennifer Guidry will appeal to the hearts of military wives and mothers with her custom crafted jewelry supporting each branch of the service. Kim Koltzau’s artistry with her Steampunk Cellars ceramics will be sure to enthrall you and Jennifer Howard’s cheerful painted bottles will bring a smile to your face.
Jump for joy
Bounce, jump, slide and tumble over at the Inflatable Village in the cabin area of the park. The “kid approved” Inflatable Village is a favorite attraction and will feature four stations for energetic children. Be sure to stop by the booths in the area and thank sponsors Liberty Tax Services, Pioneer Community Hospital of Stokes County, Universal Healthcare of King, and Chermak & Hanson Orthodontics for their generosity in providing this popular feature for KingFest 2012.
Sweet, Saucy or Scary?
Families, school classes, scout troops and other groups are invited to put their creativity to work and fashion a scarecrow for the Scarecrow Contest sponsored by Unlimited Success/Partnership for a Drug Free NC. Completed scarecrows should be registered and placed in the ground at the scarecrow center near the historic Spainhour Cabin on KingFest morning. Judging will take place at 11 a.m. and prizes will be awarded on stage at 1 p.m. All participants will receive a ribbon and a goodie bag. First place wins $50, second place $30 and third $20.
Hear the whistle blowing?
Listen for the whistle and hop aboard the NewBridge Express at KingFest this Saturday for an entertaining ride to the other side of the park. Young train enthusiasts, and adults as well, will enjoy the ride as engineer Rick Walker provides lively commentary along the paths around the park.
Defend your title at corn hole
Are you the reigning tailgate champion for corn hole? Then come compete in the Corn Hole Tournament at KingFest and defend your title. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of King, the Corn Hole Tournament will be held in the field between the Maintenance Building and King Elementary School. Advance registrations are available online at www.kingnc.com, or you may register at the Rotary Club booth near the RJR Music stage beginning at 10 a.m. Competition begins at 10:30 a.m. and will conclude at 2 p.m. The registration fee is $5 and the winning team will be awarded medals and half of the total registration fees collected for the event. Many thanks to the King Fire Department who will be supervising the event.
Much to learn at the Family Safety Center
Don’t forget to visit sponsor Forsyth Tech in the Family Safety Center area near the music to learn about all the courses Forsyth Tech is offering in the community and the many educational opportunities that are available locally. Members of the King Fire Department and the King Police Department, many of whom receive training at Forsyth Tech, will also be on hand to offer special tips and encourage safety for the entire family.
Youth Fishing Tournament offers prizes
The Youth Fishing Tournament, sponsored by David L. May Jr. Nationwide Insurance Agency and BB&T, is open to ages 14 and under and will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the pond in Central Park. Registration will open at 10 a.m. at the bridge and participants will receive a “goodie bag” to help pass the time as they prepare to snag “the big one.” Registration forms are also available online at www.kingnc.com. Competitors will vie for great fishing prizes for first and second place in each age division and the fishing enthusiast who reels in the largest catch of the day will win a trophy. Members of the Chestnut Grove Ruritan Club and representatives from BB&T will be on hand to assist the youngsters. Participants should bring their own fishing rod, equipment and bait for the contest. Prizes will be awarded at the RJR Music stage in the afternoon.
Hungry?
If your stomach starts to growl at KingFest, you are in luck! The many food vendors in the music stage area will be delighted to help you satisfy your hunger and soothe that appetite. You may choose from Oink’n & Cluck’n barbeque, Chestnut Grove Ruritan Club ham biscuits, Little Italy pizza, First Christian Church tacos in a bag, Boy Scouts roasted corn, Trinity United Methodist Church hot dogs, Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church pintos and cornbread or nachos for a filling meal. If it is the sweet tooth you want to appease, try the piping hot funnel cakes from Olive Grove Baptist Youth, ice cream from the Chestnut Grove Ruritan Club or Saori’s, shaved ice from Tropical Sno, or cake samples from the West Stokes students. A new addition to the food vending area this year, members of the West Stokes Foods Classes will be competing with each other to win ribbons for their cakes. Purchase a plate of samples and vote for your favorite. The students will even have full slices and half cakes for sale that day, too. All proceeds from the cake sale will be used for the family and consumer science programs at West Stokes.
Step back in time
A visit to the Heritage Craft Demonstration Area near the historic Spainhour Cabin will carry you back in time as you watch the artistry of yesteryear. The soap making, apple cider pressing, metal smithing, gem mining, wood carving and macramé crafts that have enchanted visitors in past years will again be part of the activity, along with some new additions to the area. Lenny Moore, a local blacksmith, will use a small fire to forge iron into decorative objects. Patty Byrd will be joining the group and displaying her skill in painting signs with a rustic and weathered appearance reminiscent of those from the past. Ken Curtiss will also be rejoining the demonstrators this year to display his intricate and amazing glass blowing talent. The Heritage Demonstrators, also including a quilter and a watercolor artist, are sponsored by Slate Funeral Home and Stokes County Economic Development. While you are visiting the heritage crafts, let the Spainhour family give you a tour of the cabin.
Horseshoe pitching tournament offers friendly competition
Adults, do you remember when your grandparents gathered up a crowd of family members and neighbors to have a friendly competition pitching horseshoes? KingFest is your chance to recall that nostalgic scene and to discover what made that time so entertaining. Stokes Family YMCA will again sponsor a Horseshoe Pitching Tournament throughout the day at KingFest. Register at the horseshoe pits behind the Veterans’ Memorial and try your luck with a game that has been played for generations.
Get ready for the McDonald’s Kids’ Olympics
Children, save some energy for the McDonald’s Kid’s Olympics which will get underway at 2:15 p.m. in the field between the Maintenance Building at Central Park and King Elementary School. You watched the London Summer Olympic Games and now it is your turn to show your speed, balance and skill. The games are open to children ages six through 14. Everyone who participates will go home with a medal and a goodie bag and all participants will be entered into a drawing for $50. Register for the games throughout the day at the McDonald’s Tent near the RJR Music Stage and come to the field at 2 p.m. for the “opening ceremonies.” The McDonald’s Kids’ Olympics will feature contests in the “Big Mac Sack Attack,” “Golden Arches Marches,” “McFlurry Hurry,” “Hotcake Hurl,” “ McScrambled Egg Toss,” “Little Apple Dippers,” “McDouble Shuffle,” and the “McNugget Tug-it.”
Unlimited Success Kids’ Zone is new
Unlimited Success/Partnership for a Drug Free NC will host a new event for school-aged children in the music stage area this year. The Unlimited Success Kids’ Zone will feature a balloon artist, “Mad Science” demonstrations, Native American storytelling and crafts. Educator/artist Barbara Locklear will relate traditional Native American lore and incorporate a hands-on craft with each story for her audience. Participants will take home a finished art project as a reminder of the wholesome message of her stories. Children will be enthralled with the “Mad Science” experiments and they will have the opportunity to make their own container of “slime.” Children and adults can also watch as fanciful animals and figures are fashioned from balloons at the center.
Little Folks share in the fun
Giggles, cheers and squeals of delight. That is what you’ll hear over at Stokes Partnership for Children’s Little Folks Tent at KingFest. With the help of the Wise (Y) Start van and costumed Charles the Chef, preschoolers will be entertained in the area with age appropriate crafts, bubbles and activities. Bring the older children along so that they can also join in the fun in decorating a pumpkin as the Stokes Partnership staff, Windstream representatives and volunteers assist them in creating one-of-a-kind pumpkins to take home at the end of the day. The complimentary pumpkins are provided through the generous sponsorships of Stokes Tire and Automotive, Inc. and Windstream Communications.
Allegacy Portrait Center to feature caricature artist
Here’s your chance to have a unique original portrait done of yourself or your family. Allegacy Federal Credit Union is sponsoring the Allegacy Portrait Center featuring an accomplished caricature artist. The artist will be drawing throughout the day and the sketches are free courtesy of Allegacy Federal Credit Union.
Sport purple pinkies for Polio
The Rotary Club of King invites you to sport a purple pinkie finger the day of KingFest. Members of the high school clubs will be circling the park to encourage $1 donations in exchange for dipping your pinkie finger in the non-toxic purple dye to support the eradication of polio around the world. Rotary International is dedicated to eliminating the crippling threat of polio with vaccination campaigns throughout the world. Through their efforts, polio is now contained to just three countries.
