“When will Town and Country open again?” That’s a question frequently asked around King these days. And according to one of the owners, the restaurant could be open as early as next week.

The popular King restaurant closed more than a year ago for repairs after fire caused extensive damage to the building. But John Vlasis, one of the restaurant owners, said Monday that the restaurant could open sometime next week. The exact day will depend on how quickly the finishing touches come together and when a few additional items, such as computers, arrive.

Vlasis said he gets inquiries constantly about the the business. “It’s just been here so long,” he noted. The most recent owners have been in charge of the business for 25 years, and the restaurant was a staple in the city well before they took over.

People who have been visiting the restaurant for years will be confronted with a new look when they step inside Town and Country. Vlasis said the amount of space inside the restaurant is about the same, but inside has been completely redone.

“Everything was torn out,” Vlasis noted.

The menu will be similar to the past, Vlasis said, with the best sellers still on the menu. He said some new items have been added such as a few more salads.

While most hiring has been completed for the restaurant, Vlasis said people can still continue to inquire at the business from time to time to see when positions become available.

The hours could change, but as of Monday, Vlasis expected the restaurant’s schedule to regularly be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the week, with Saturday and Sunday being the only days for breakfast to be served. For more information, call the restaurant at 336-983-3641.

The fire that damaged Town and Country began while many King residents were attending a Memorial Day service at Central Park last year. Some people gathered along the side of the road and in nearby parking lots to watch firefighters try to put out the blaze at the King landmark. Main Street was closed from the Kirby Road stoplight at CVS to Jefferson Church Road for a few hours while firefighters battled to put out the flames.

The Century 21 realty office beside the restaurant sustained smoke damage but has since been repaired. Town and Country’s kitchen had heavy fire damage and the dining area had minor fire and smoke and water damage.

You Decide: How should North Carolina fund roads?
My father was born in 1922 on a farm in rural Ohio. Horses and carriages were as common as cars. When the first road was built it was tolled, meaning only those who paid the gatekeeper at the entrance to the road could use it. This is how early roads were financed. If you used a road, you paid...
