South Stokes junior running back Jacquan Martin rushed for 270 yards and three touchdowns as the Sauras racked up 465 yards of rushing offense en route to a 41-6 dismantling of North Wilkes in Hays on Friday night.
South’s All-State linebacker/running back Zack Singleton set up the Sauras’ first score in the first quarter. Singleton caught a shovel pass from junior quarterback J.J. Davis and broke off a 40-yard run down to the North Wilkes 4-yard line. Two plays later, Martin punched the ball across the goal line. Brian Himmelspach’s point-after kick gave South a 7-0 advantage.
But North Wilkes responded. In the opening moments of the second quarter, Vikings’ quarterback L.J. Hendren found wide receiver Josh Martin open down the left sideline. Martin sprinted 91 yards to the end zone to pull the Vikings to within 7-6. North Wilkes kicker Juan Benitez, however, missed the extra point attempt and South maintained a 7-6 advantage.
On its next possession, Martin rumbled 59 yards to score his second touchdown of the night. Minutes later, Martin capped a 61-yard scoring drive with a 3-yard touchdown run as South’s lead swelled to 21-6 before halftime.
South Stokes sophomore running back Christian Artis scored two second-half touchdowns and Singleton scored from 10 yards out in the third quarter to give the Sauras a convincing win.
South Stokes (2-0) has a bye week coming up. The Sauras host Alleghany on Sept. 7.
North Stokes senior quarterback Garrett Wood went 25-for-39 passing for 346 yards and 5 touchdowns as the Vikings annihilated Patrick County, 62-26, in Stuart (Va.) on Friday night.
The Vikings’ offense tallied nearly 600 yards of total offense, most of it coming through the air. North Stokes All-State wide receiver Matthew Hopkins had three touchdown catches, while teammate Dustin Smith had two touchdown grabs on the night. North running backs Dillon Rogers and T.J. Sonafrank combined for 4 touchdowns as the Vikings improved to 2-0 on the season. In two games, Wood has thrown for nearly 800 yards and 9 touchdowns with only one interception.
North Stokes (2-0) plays its home opener against North Iredell on Aug. 31.
West Stokes rebounded from its season-opening loss to Albemarle to defeat Forbush, 14-6, in East Bend on Friday night. The Wildcats travel to Central Davidson for a nonconference contest on Aug. 31.
