Stokes County man wins $100,000 with scratch-off ticket
by Staff Report

A Stokes County resident won $100,000 in the lottery after reading in his horoscope that he would see an “upturn” in his financial affairs.

Ken Johnson of King read this encouraging horoscope on Thursday then decided to try his luck Friday morning at Pete’s Grocery on Doral Drive in Tobaccoville. He bought a $4,000,000 Gold Bullion ticket but did not win anything. He purchased another scratch-off ticket and won $25. He used that money to buy one more ticket, this time winning $100,000.

“I scratched the numbers, and I saw all of these zeroes,” Johnson told N.C. Education Lottery staff. “I asked the guy behind the counter, ‘Am I reading this right?’”

Johnson works as a manufacturing associate. He received a check for $68,006 after taxes were withheld. Johnson said his wife recently lost her job, so the win was a “blessing.” They plan to use his winnings to pay bills and save money for a rainy day.

Johnson is the fourth person to win $100,000 with the $20 game, which began in February. It began with three $4 million prizes, seven $1 million prizes and eight $100,000 prizes. As of Tuesday afternoon, two $4 million prizes, five $1 million prizes and four $100,000 prizes remained to be claimed. Those who win the top prize have the option of receiving a 20-year annuity or a lump sum that can be claimed in either cash or gold bullion.

As of June 30, 2013, Stokes County education programs had received more than $12.5 million in lottery funds.

You Decide: How should North Carolina fund roads?
My father was born in 1922 on a farm in rural Ohio. Horses and carriages were as common as cars. When the first road was built it was tolled, meaning only those who paid the gatekeeper at the entrance to the road could use it. This is how early roads were financed. If you used a road, you paid...
