PILOT MOUNTAIN - The Cards stayed ahead of the Sauras by one run in the third round of 1A state baseball playoffs at East Surry High School on Saturday afternoon. The Cards downed the Sauras by a score of 3-2 and will remain on the road for a state championship title.
The Cards got out to an early 2-0 lead at the bottom of the first inning. Then, officials put the game on pause at the top of the second inning, as some afternoon showers rolled through the area.
Neither side scored a run in the second and third innings.
At the top of the fourth inning, Jamison Nagle knocked one out of the park to bring the score to 2-1.
The Cards’ Drew Wilson retaliated with a solo homer of his own at the bottom of the fifth inning, which brought the score to 3-1, with the Cards still in the lead.
At the top of the sixth inning, it seemed like the Sauras might be gaining some momentum. Nagle hit another solo homer, which brought the score to 3-2.
Then, Ross Jackson had a base hit. Jonathan Montgomery stepped in to run for Jackson, and stole second and third bases. It looked like the Sauras were poised the tie the game up, but then the Cards tagged a runner out on the way to first and ended the Sauras’ turn at bat.
The Sauras failed to make anything happen at the top of the seventh inning. East Surry’s Scott Meredith quickly struck out three batters to end the game with a score of 3-2.
Sauras Coach Mitch Adams talked to his team after the tough loss to the Cards, which brought an end to the team’s season and bid for a championship title.
“I know that one hurt,” Adams said.
Adams said that his team’s approach at the plate was not good.
“We never got the hits we needed,” he said. “We just didn’t hit it, especially when we needed to.”
Still, Adams said that the Sauras had nothing to be ashamed of at the end of the season.
“You had a great season,” he said. “That’s baseball - you win some, you lose some.”
The Sauras end their season with a record of 17-9.
