The Stokes County Sheriff’s Office took nine people into custody on drug charges over Thanksgiving week through “Operation Harvest Moon.”

The Sheriff’s Office conducted the arrests at different times of the day Monday, Nov. 19 through Wednesday, Nov. 21 instead of using the more common early morning roundup technique.

“We never want to become repetitive or predictable,” said Chief Deputy Craig Carico.

He explained that the multi-day roundup approach is actually more conducive to planning the operation. The Sheriff’s Office can set the arrests within its own time frame and do it more strategically.

“There’s not as much pressure,” Carico added.

In some cases, the Sheriff’s Office called the suspects, told them they had a warrant for their arrest and offered them the opportunity to turn themselves in. Carico noted that most who are called actually comply. Those who do not are apprehended by sheriff’s deputies.

The culmination of Operation Harvest Moon was based on several months of investigative work, including surveillance and undercover work. Agencies assisting the Stokes County Sheriff’s Office were N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement, Stokes County Probation Office, Walnut Cove Police Department and Mayodan Police Department.

No particular area was targeted in Operation Harvest Moon. Suspected offenders were reaped from several areas of Stokes County.

Although the charges were primarily narcotics-based, non-tax paid liquor was also found during one of the drug searches.

“When you find illegal drugs, a lot of times you’ll have illegal alcohol down the line, too,” explained Carico. “We also have a pill issue now that wasn’t an issue back a few years ago.”

Personally I think that the residents of Stokes county would rather have OUR tax money for spent on the crack and meth houses to get them off the streets instead of wasting our $$$ on busting the small time marijauna users. Let's get real here, which is worse... Meth/Crack or Marijauna???
