An early morning fire damaged a portion of the roof in the Wieland Copper manufacturing plant on U.S. Highway 311 in Pine Hall, but Stokes County Fire Marshal Frankie Burcham said the fire was put out in a few hours.
A machine in the back of the building caught the roof on fire around 4 a.m., Burcham said. Employees of the plant commonly referred to as Kobe Copper were evacuated to the other end of the large facility. No injuries were reported.
Burcham said five or six fire departments from Stokes and Rockingham counties responded to the fire. It took about 45 minutes to get it under control, because firefighters had to take hose lines onto the roof. The fire was completely extinguished in about 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
Burcham estimated the damage was probably less than $10,000. Part of the roof was wood, so the company has already called a contractor to replace it with metal, he said.
The plant has been cleared and turned back over to the employees by fire crews.
