BBQ for Books adds a side of bluegrass

Stokes Partnership for Children (SPC) is pleased to announce that the annual event BBQ for Books will be held Friday, Oct. 6 from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Mount Olive Elementary School in King. As a special twist, the event name has been updated to “BBQ for Books with a Side of Bluegrass.”

According to Cindy Tuttle, SPC Executive Director, “Bluegrass music is woven into the fabric of Stokes County’s rich heritage. BBQ for Books raises funds for early literacy initiatives for the county’s young children, including Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Because of these two things, it only made sense to add a side of bluegrass to our event.”

Three bands will be featured, Tommy Nichols and Harrison Ridge, Hubert Lawson and the Bluegrass Country Boys and the GoodFellers Acoustic Band.

“Bring your dancing shoes! You can look forward to good food and great entertainment, including our famous silent auction, Heads and Tails Game and Pig Pen Raffle. BBQ for Books has the reputation for having spectacular prizes! We are always trying to outdo ourselves,” Tuttle said. “This year, due to high demand, we have added back the take-out option. Now folks can choose to dine-in with us or take their food to go. However, we’re encouraging people to stay because they don’t want to miss out on the music.”

Food will be served from 5 p.m. until to 8 p.m. and features John Brown’s BBQ. The first band begins at 6 p.m. and the last band ends at 8:45 p.m., with auction winners announced at that time. You do not have to be present to win. Tickets are $15 per plate, which includes barbecue pork, fried chicken, two slaws, beans, drink and dessert and all the entertainment. More baked goods will be available for sale.
